TEAR
In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Or The Modern Prometheus, Frankensteins monster is the character full of misery, the object of turture who despite this believes he will find hapiness.
"Who can describe their horror and consternation on beholding me? Agatha fainted; and Safie, unable to attend to her friend, rushed out of the cottage. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung; in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick. I could have torn him limb from limb, as the lion rends the antelope. But my heart sunk within me as with bitter sickness, and I refrained." (pg 123) Even though the blind old man gave him the courage to face this children for the old man was compassionate towards him, the children, who are not blind, see a monstrosity near their father. "... despair had not yet taken possession me; my feeling were those of rage and revenge. I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants, and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery." (pg 124) Even though he is mistreated and full of rage for how the world has been treating him, he still has hope of reciving kindness so he will also act with kindness.
Ugly one may be on the outside so much that one cannot call it human are sometimes the most beautiful on the inside. One expresses kindness end up some to step on it while others repay it back with kindness. The kindest of people are often the mistreated ones, which comes from other people and the world it self.
"I shall die. I shall no longer feel the agonies which now consume me, or be the prey of feelings unsatisfied, yet unquenched." (pg 209) After murdering and seeing the death of the helpless and lovely, he know thinks that he should die to end his suffering for all. "My spirit will sleep in peace; or if it thinks, it will surely think thus. Farewell" (pg 210) Before jumping to the waves, which will end his life, he believes that he will finally reach peace in death.
One suffers from depression for how much agony one can take, those who are strong can surpass it, but those who are weak cannot and seek a way out, death. Once dead, one can't really feel anything, the suffering ends as well as the hapiness ends. Death affects others from causing them to get weak for some to get stronger emotionally or can also cause them to weaken in general.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstien Or The Modern Prometheus would not be melancholic withouts Frankenstein, for he is the object that is full of suffer from mankind that one cannot but help to feel sad for him.
"Who can describe their horror and consternation on beholding me? Agatha fainted; and Safie, unable to attend to her friend, rushed out of the cottage. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung: in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick. I could have torn him limb from limb, as the lion rends the antelope. But my heart sunk within me as with bitter sickness, and I refrained. I saw him on the point of repeating his blow, when, overcomed by pain and anguish, I quitted the cottage and in the general tumult escaped unperceived to my hovel." (pg 123) Frankenstien went to see the old blind man to see if there was hope for him or the realization of his fear, upon talking to him, he found kidness and generousity from him, which gave him the strengh to see if the other would accept him, but instead he was welcomed with horror and furry, this made him realize his fear. " I know not; despair had not yet taken possession of me; my feelings were thoseof rage and revenge. I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants, and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery." (pg 124) He hold on his violent temper which was made by the cruelty of the world, despite this he still believes that he can be loved, accepted and live in harmony.
